The Pro’s and Con’s from a Wedding Musician’s perspective

I’m Lucy, a wedding singer and saxophone player and I’ve had the pleasure of performing at lots of weekday weddings. While Saturday weddings are the norm, weekday weddings are becoming more and more popular for couples looking to save money and create a more intimate experience. But are they the right choice for you?

Let’s dive into the pros and cons of weekday weddings from a musician’s perspective.

The Pro’s of a weekday wedding

1. More affordable for couples

One of the biggest reasons couples choose a weekday wedding is cost savings. Venues and some suppliers may offer lower rates for non-peak days. This means you might be able to afford that dream venue or book premium entertainment without breaking the bank.

2. More availability for you favourite suppliers

Since Saturdays book up quickly (sometimes years in advance), choosing a weekday gives you a better chance of securing your top-choice venue, caterer, and, of course, live musician. I’ve had couples tell me they were able to book their dream team simply because they were flexible on the date!

3. A more intimate atmosphere

Weekday weddings tend to be smaller and more relaxed. If you’re looking for a cosy, meaningful celebration with close family and friends, a weekday wedding is a great choice. Plus, a smaller guest list often means a more engaged audience for live music, making the performance feel even more special.

4. Unique and Memorable Experience

Your wedding won’t blend in with the typical Saturday rush. A Wednesday or Thursday wedding feels different, and guests may appreciate the midweek celebration as something special. I’ve played at weekday weddings where the relaxed vibe actually led to some of the most fun and interactive performances! The Cons of a Weekday Wedding

1. Guest Availability and Attendance

This is the biggest challenge. Some guests may have to take time off work or may not be able to attend at all, especially if they’re traveling. If you have a lot guests who don’t live locally, a weekday wedding might make attendance tricky.

2. Shorter Celebrations

Some venues may close earlier on weekdays, meaning your reception might not last as long as it would on a weekend. Guests might also leave early due to work the next morning. If you’re hoping for an epic Ibiza sax, early hours of the morning finish, a Saturday might be better.

3. Supplier Scheduling Conflicts

While some wedding suppliers offer discounts for weekday weddings, others may be unavailable due to other commitments. For musicians like me, a weekday gig means juggling wedding performances with childcare and teaching commitments. It’s always best to book early to make sure your dream band or DJ can make amendments to their diary to be available.

4. Possible Limited After-Party Options

If you’re planning an after-party at a bar or club, some places may have limited hours or events that conflict with your wedding night. On a Saturday, you’re more likely to find lively nightlife options to continue the celebration.

Final Thoughts: Should You Have a Weekday Wedding?

Weekday weddings can be a fantastic option for couples who want a more affordable, intimate, and unique celebration. However, they do require extra planning to ensure guests can attend and that suppliers align with your vision.

As a wedding musician, I love weekday weddings because they create a more personal and meaningful setting for live music. Whether it’s a romantic saxophone solo during the ceremony or a high-energy dance set, a weekday wedding can be just as magical as a Saturday one!
